Whenever a film debuts at a film festival and then takes a year to come out, people can guess the worst. Well, I’m here to tell you that our friend is an exception to that. I saw the film when it was titled by The Friend during the festival, and it’s a very good film. Casey Affleck, Dakota Johnson and Jason Segel are performing first-class to say the least. Now that it’s gearing up for a January release, a trailer has debuted that features a quote from none other than yours! It was an honor and a pleasure to be quoted in such a powerful work. Check out the trailer below and look out for my quote!
Here is the description I wrote for the film last year when it was still called The Friend: “The film is a look at an extraordinary friendship based on a true story. When Matt Teague (Casey Affleck) first meets Dane Faucheux (Jason Segel), he is ready to hate him. After all, he’s the employee of his wife Nicole Teague (Dakota Johnson) and accidentally asked her out on a date. They bond, however, somewhat spurred on by Nicole, who really values Dane’s friendship. Soon, the three are best friends leaning on each other when life gets tough, as can be for a struggling journalist and actress at the start of their careers. Dane is unsuccessful in life, but impeccable as a friend. Then Nicole is diagnosed with terminal cancer and Dane becomes even bigger. Matt doesn’t handle it well, and especially drowns when it comes to looking after her daughters Evie (Violet McGraw) and Molly (Isabella Kai). So Dane quits his service job and moves in to help. What is supposed to be just a couple of weeks turns into a much longer stay that costs him a girlfriend. Dane is not deterred, however, and delivers a stone to all four, to the bitter end, and meanwhile the deterioration of his friends takes a toll on him. Gabriela Cowperthwaite directs a script by Brad Ingelsby, partly inspired by Matthew Teague’s award-winning article. Rob Simonsen composed the score while Joe Anderson did the camera. Supporting players include Gwendoline Christie, Reed Diamond, Azita Ghanizada and Cherry Jones. “
Also a small excerpt from my review: “A trio of great performances help make this film better. Casey Affleck, Dakota Johnson, and especially Jason Segel, deliver here and invest in ways filmmaking can’t always. Affleck has blew us away time and time again, so the skilled way he portrays grief and warts and all of the caregivers affects us. Johnson is bright and warm with cancer, but he’s not afraid to delve into the darker aspects of the disease towards the end of the game. Then there is sails that are easily best on the show. His performance as a dedicated friend ready to put his failing life on hold to save others is often nothing short of captivating. He will blow you away. “
