Amazon Prime Pick of the Month December 2020

The great Riz Ahmed makes headlines over those already celebrated Sound of metal (2020), premiered on December 4th, where he plays a drummer who has lost his hearing. Drug addiction, depression, and doubt plague him, but good people – including the highly talented Olivia Cooke – help him hear the light at the end of the tunnel. The film apparently uses some innovative sound design techniques to immerse viewers in the characters’ world, and the film’s early word was generally positive. Ahmed is always a watchable actor, and that nod to the power of the human mind seems a perfect match for his talents.

A pair of promising first class originals

I am your wife

2018’s Fast Color is one of the best movies you haven’t seen this year, and now director / co-writer Julia Hart follows with another female genre story. I am your wife (2020) arrives December 11th and tells the story of a young mother who was forced to flee after her husband had major problems. Rachel Brosnahan stars in this 1970s crime drama, and it seems to deliver a compelling mix of thrill and dramatic tension.

While not a movie, the new series The wilderness (starts Dec 11th) is as promising as its Lord of the Flies reef, which focuses on a group of teenage girls trapped on an island. A plane crash lands them there, a crash with mysterious origins, and the girls are forced into a struggle for survival. I don’t expect his story to go down the path of the lost, but even a clear survival story can result in fascinating, must-see television.

The Expanse Amazon Prime December 2020

Season 5 of The wide lands on December 16, and while I haven’t seen an episode of the series, its longevity means I’ll be expecting it soon. Science fiction shows don’t last long these days, and when you add the overwhelming positive praise of the series from fans and critics. The show’s premise was epic from the start, and has only gotten bigger and more ambitious since then. While name talent like Thomas Jane and David Strathairn are popping up everywhere, the core cast conveniently stays off most people’s radar, adding to the possibility. I will delve into it soon.

At the other end of the critical appreciation spectrum is priest (2011). The action / science fiction / fantasy film offers a story of people battling vampires in a post-apocalyptic setting – or another world, I’m not sure – while taking time to criticize organized religion . They’re silly gimmicks, but as a popcorn fluff, it delivers solid spectacle and fun action.

A Tom Hanks double feature!

A league of its own

Look, usually the ideal dual role is two great movies linked in some way. That’s not it. But both picks include Tom Hanks. So what can go wrong? You will start with Angels and demons (2009). Yes, it’s a sequel, but it’ll be just as enjoyable if you haven’t seen The Da Vinci Code (2006). It’s overly serious and crazy, you will get confused but you will come out on the other end and crave perfection.

In this case, press the play button A league of its own (1992). Penny Marshall’s Ode to Crying in Baseball remains an ensemble comedy masterpiece that is just as fun to watch again as it was the first time, and it leaves viewers with a lot of choice. That’s not a bad thing.
