“Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are TIME’s Person of the Year 2020 to change American history to show that the powers of empathy are greater than the anger of division, to share a vision of healing in a grieving world “wrote Time Editor-in-Chief Edward Felsenthal.
Eric Yuan, CEO of Zoom, was named Entrepreneur of the Year.
The announcements came during Time’s first special to air on NBC. Today BTS was named Entertainer of the Year and LeBron James named Athlete of the Year.
The award was previously named Man of the Year, but has been changed to reflect changing cultural needs. The award usually goes to the most famous and impactful news maker of the year who has led to previous winners such as Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Ayatollah Khomeini.
Shortlisted for the Time Honor were Biden, President Donald Trump, Frontline Health Care Workers and Dr. Anthony Fauci and the Racial Justice Movement.
