Welcome to Watches of the Week, where we track the rarest, wildest, and most sought-after watches from celebrities.
Giannis Antetokounmpo seems a lot more comfortable with a pair of rubber bracelets around his wrists than with a watch. Since I started writing this column in April last year, I’ve seen that the MVP, one behind the other, is wearing exactly one watch: a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. It’s important to note that the Oyster Perpetual is Rolex’s entry-level model – a part that is appropriate to a manager with a bonus check to burn, not a dual MVP. But there was Antetokounmpo who wore his to the 2019 NBA awards ceremony. The choice of wristwear was consistent with everything we know about the famously thrifty Greek freak. Remember when he went over a refrigerator with free bottled water in the NBA bubble and dragged a trash bag full of it back into his room? It felt like neither fame nor money had the power to change Antetokounmpo. But it seems all the freak took to self-medicate was a $ 228 million pressure over the edge. This week when Antetokounmpo signed his new, historically rich, Supermax deal with the Bucks, he was wearing a very nice watch – I’ll be damned! -.
Giannis Antetokounmpos Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore is anything but an entry-level model. This piece is priced at roughly $ 22,000 – and as we wrote recently, every Royal Oak is the de facto watch for celebrities with a reason to celebrate. Signing a massive new contract counts. And this is definitely the right watch: the Greek freak has a tendency to make normal-sized objects look like miniatures, which is why they have switched to the oversized offshore version of the Royal Oak, of course. And while I know $ 22,000 is a tremendous sum compared to Antetokounmpo’s NBA cost, the cost of most luxury watches, and $ 228 million, this is a drop in the ocean. Maybe we can still call it frugal.
LeBron James Audemars Piguet black ceramic Royal Oak
Just like on the pitch, James and Antetokounmpo are battling it out in the watch world. Bron’s openwork black ceramic version of the Royal Oak is Audemars Piguet’s latest release and one of the most sought-after in the world of timepieces. The watch side Hodinkee called black ceramic the “hottest material in watchmaking,” largely due to AP’s constant experimentation. To date, AP has only released five models of the Royal Oaks in black ceramic, and each is rarer than the other. “That means they’re hard to come by. Like, really hard to come by. You need to be an existing customer with an AP boutique, and a good one, ”Hodinkee writes of the piece. Somehow I don’t think that’s a problem for a man like LeBron.
Robert Lewandowski’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
FC Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski won the FIFA Men’s Player of the Year award, and he apparently received the memo to every superstar athlete this week. Like Bron and Antetokounmpo, Lewandowski wore a Royal Oak. It’s not hard to see the appeal of the watch – just look at how different these three watches are. Giannis got huge, James is all about case material, and then Lewandowski comes through with this delicious grape dial. No two Royal Oaks are alike and this model has a museum-quality face: In addition to the purple, there is also this tourbillon – the ultimate in flex in watchmaking.
Rolex Day-Date by Karl-Anthony Towns
OK, so it’s not a Royal Oak, but Towns is proof that you can’t go wrong with a Rolex Day-Date. Seeing the same watch three times in a row gives you a completely different perspective on a classic piece like this one. Why bother with an octagon when you can have a circle? Who needs the flex of a tourbillon over the convenience of a watch that records the day of the week? Yes, ceramics are cool, but is it really that much better than good old gold, baby !?
2 Chainz ‘Cartier de Santos
While attending Offset’s birthday party, 2 Chainz wore a Cartier Santos. Evidence continues to mount that a broken Santos is the next big rapper watch. Later that year, the watch was worn by Swae Lee and Tyler, the creator. Just last week, at Lil Baby’s birthday party, Young Thug wore an icy skeleton version of the Santos. It’s a smart move: while everyone is focused on sports watches from Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille, people like 2 Chainz are moving towards Cartier.
