I used to be able to sum up Pete Davidson’s fashion in a few words: unpredictable, maximalist, and oh yeah, neon. His mixed prints, cropped pants and extensive sneaker collection made him a “Scumbro” style icon – whether he intended to or not. But lately Pete has shifted his style strategy away from great streetwear to get totally immersed in comfort, and he has told POPSUGAR that he seeks Adam Sandler for inspiration.
After a few years of non-stop headlines, Pete was relatively low in 2020. Apart from this Saturday night live Skits in which he is increasingly in front of the cameras was the last public appearance Pete made in the Big time adolescence Premiere in March when he wore all black. I wouldn’t say the era of the clash of colors and slides with socks is over, but when Pete greeted me with a maroon North Face sweatshirt on a recent Zoom call it felt like any 20 year old’s aesthetic whether famous or not.
“”[Adam Sandler is] Just the coolest, most confident, and most comfortable person you will ever see. ”
When Pete and his grandfather, known as Poppy, chatted with me about their vacation spot, Amazon Echo, the King of Staten Island star gave a glimpse into the way he puts outfits together these days. Of course, Pete takes some tips from Poppy, whom he himself called “a fashion icon”. Pete described Poppy’s daily clothes – “cool buttoned flannels”, jeans, and New Balances – and I thought of my own grandpa who subscribed to the same uniform. Is there something they know that we don’t?
Outside of his own family, however, Pete is inspired by Adam’s way of dressing. Pete told me that he “looked at everything everyone was wearing” to find “cool” outfits, but now his main priority is comfort. “I like to wear large hoodies and oversized sweatpants,” he said. “I think this is my favorite and most comfortable thing.” He admires the way Adam (another) SNL Alum) nailed a distinctive style for its own ease.
“I took pretty much anything Adam Sandler wore and tried to do that because he’s my favorite fashion icon,” said Pete. “When you look at a photo of Sandler on set, or when he wears his regular clothes, he’s just the coolest, most confident, and most comfortable person you will ever see. I’ve been trying to fit that type of style now.”
Adam and Pete are close in real life (Pete once said, “He’s definitely the best. Just like caring and cute and not full of crap. Which is very rare to find.”), Which makes that stylish nod all the cuter. Aren’t we all dressing a little more like Adam these days, and loungewear is on the rise in 2020? According to Pete, we’re all just catching up with the standard Adam set. “He’s been tipped all along.”
