Second Life Podcast: Maria Sharapova

If you are familiar with the world of tennis, you undoubtedly know that Maria Sharapova is an absolute powerhouse. Sharapova, a legendary tennis world champion who was voted number one in the world five times by the WTA, moved to the United States at the age of six to pursue a tennis career and quickly rose to the top at age 14. Sharapova won the prestigious Wimbledon at the age of 17, which would make the first of her five career Grand Slam titles. What was impressive was that Sharapova was the 7th player in the open era to complete the career Grand Slam and the first female athlete to serve as the Olympic standard-bearer for the Russian delegation. To say that Sharapova’s achievements as an athlete are inspiring is an understatement.

And while Sharapova’s tennis accomplishments are monumental, her off-court career is just as impressive. At a young age, Sharapova acquired valuable business skills through her various sponsorship and advertising contracts with well-known brands such as Nike, Evian and Porsche. In 2012, Sharapova started her business outside of tennis (and a bit) cutie pie): Sugarpova, a premium confection line with lively aromas of pralines, truffles and gums, designed as a well-deserved indulgence. Then in 2017 –YesSharapova became a New York Times Bestselling author with her inspiring autobiography, Unstoppable: My life so far. And in February of this year, after living the rigorous life of a professional athlete for 28 years, Sharapova announced her retirement in a first-person play entitled “Tennis – I’m Goodbye” published in Vanity Fair and Vogue.

Sharapova’s amalgamation of valuable life experiences has played an important role where it is today. She now acts as a strategic investor and advisor in synergistic brands like Supergoop !, Bala Bangles, Therabody and Chief Athletic Officer for a new online educational platform taught by professional sports icons The Skills.
