The deadline starts with the New Years and Film Awards season with our first edition of Contenders International starting this morning at 8am. The event will feature 22 titles from 15 studios, streamers and distributors with presentations including clips and Q&A from filmmakers / talent. A total of 19 of the films are official submissions in the Best International Film category at the 93rd Academy Awards.

While international markets have been a profit center for the studios for many years, local films are becoming increasingly important outside of festivals and indeed in their home countries. This was particularly the case in 2019 for South Korea’s Parasite, which became the first foreign language film to win the Oscar for best picture in February 2020.

Indeed, there is plenty of talent overseas and we at . are excited to put the spotlight on worthy films that don’t always get the attention they deserve and give the filmmakers a chance to share their work and inspirations in front of a committed one , discerning audience to discuss audience. Well-known names from Contenders International include Sophia Loren, Edoardo Ponti, Nina Hoss, Andrei Konchalovsky, Philippe Lacôte, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Vinterberg, Javier Cámara, Fernando Trueba, Alexander Nanau and more.

The countries represented include Serbia, Greece, Colombia, Belarus, Switzerland, Chile, Hungary, Finland, Poland, Romania, France, Georgia, Russia, the Ivory Coast, Italy, Mexico, Denmark, Slovakia, Indonesia, Guatemala and India.
