On Sunday evening, the Critics Choice Association hosted the first Critics Choice Super Awards. As a member of the CCA, I voted for the Super Awards and helped make the first list of winners. It was an awards show hosted by Kevin Smith and Dani Fernandez. In terms of big screen winners, Palm Springs and Soul led the way, both of which took home three awards. The Boys grabbed four categories on the small screen and made it the big winner of the night. Read below for the rest of the winners, but the early Critics Choice Super Awards went off without a hitch. Make sure it comes back next year, ideally with an audience …

Here is part of the press release that announced the results:

Tonight, the Critics Choice Association (CCA) announced the winners of the first Critics Choice Super Awards in a special presentation on The CW. The ceremony was remotely produced under COVID safety protocols and hosted by writer / director / podcaster Kevin Smith and actress / writer Dani Fernandez. It honored the most popular fan-obsessed genres in television and film, including superhero / comic, science fiction / fantasy, horror, action, and animation. The full show can be streamed for free on The CW App and cwtv.com starting tomorrow.

Hulu and NEON’s “Palm Springs” and Disney + “Soul” led the film winners, each receiving three trophies. Palm Springs was recognized for best science fiction / fantasy film, best actor in a science fiction / fantasy film (Andy Samberg), and best actress in a science fiction / fantasy film (Cristin Milioti) . “Soul” was recognized as the best animated film as well as the best voice actor in an animated film (Jamie Foxx) and the best voice actress in an animated film (Tina Fey).

In the series categories, Amazon’s “The Boys” received the most awards and received a total of four awards, including best superhero series, best actor in a superhero series (Antony Starr), best actress in a superhero series (Aya Cash) and best villain in one Series (Antony Starr). Starr was the only actor to receive multiple awards for his work.

With wins in both the film and series categories, Netflix topped the studio / network count at five.

The Critics Choice Association also presented the Legacy Award to the “Star Trek” franchise. She paid tribute to the cultural impact it had over several decades and continued to appeal and grow its loyal fan base with new stories and characters. Patrick Stewart, the icon of “Star Trek”, and Sonequa Martin-Green, pioneer of “Star Trek: Discovery” accepted this special award, which was presented on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the franchise company.
