SAG Awards To Be Rescheduled

When the Grammy Awards decided last week to change the date of their show on March 14th, it was only a matter of time before the other shoe fell. Of course, that date was also held by the Screen Actors Guild Awards, so a move towards this was inevitable. Well, that happened today when the 27th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were postponed to April 4th. The SAG would never compete against the Grammys and vice versa, so it makes sense. Now this important forerunner comes even later in the awards season. Will this give the SAG even more voice or will the guild step in too late? That remains to be seen. In the meantime, read on …

Here is part of Variety’s account of the move:

The 27th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were postponed to April 4, a week after the Grammy Awards were postponed to the previous date of March 14.

The awards ceremony will air at 6:00 p.m. (PT) / 9:00 p.m. (ET) on TNT and TBS and honors the outstanding film and TV achievements of 2020.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several dates for this awards season have been postponed, including the Oscars and Golden Globes broadcasts released earlier this year. The SAG Awards announced that the 2021 show will be postponed to March initially in July 2020.

Due to the surge in coronavirus cases in Los Angeles County, the Recording Academy and CBS announced last week that they would be postponing the Grammys from January 31st to the new March date that the SAG Awards had already marked.

“We are extremely disappointed to hear of the conflicting date, March 14th, announced today for this year’s Grammy Awards broadcast,” said SAG-AFTRA in a statement regarding the Grammys’ move. “We announced the same date for the SAG Awards last July in order to allow the greatest possible timing of other award ceremonies. We expect the same consideration from sister organizations across the industry. “

With the original move to March 14, the SAG Awards extended this year’s funding period by two months, including the works exhibited or broadcast between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021. Nominations for the 27th annual SAG Awards will be announced on February 4th.
