Alyssa Geiger

The high-ranking creative copywriter Alyssa “I’ll try everything once” Geiger is one of the word witches of the Goop editorial team. It covers fashion, fitness, and all the good things in between. When she’s not riding her big red bike through the canals of Venice Beach, she can be found in the mountains, hunting for snow and a solid Wi-Fi connection.

Is it weird that I’m missing the energy of a jam-packed pilates studio? The unst-unst-unsting of a dimly lit spin class? Those fleeting moments of calm after a long, drawn-out savasana? There are of course silver linings to going digital – for example, that you don’t have to sard your mat in the corner of a crowded room and lose your space in class because you can’t find a parking space.

What I found after a year of testing virtual workouts and revisiting some trusted go-to places is: The community element is important. Routines keep us honest (says the girl who is still wearing a sports bra as she tinkers with her laptop at 9 p.m.). And as is the case with most things in life, if it’s fun and challenging, and you feel good about yourself, it likely stays that way.

MONDAY:
STRETCH IT OUT

Kyle Miller

The workout: Kyle Miller Yoga

Kyle used to say this during class: Just as pasta must be soaked in boiling water for nine minutes, our bodies need warmth and effort to transform. And honestly, is there anything worse than spending your day like a stiff strand of uncooked spaghetti? Whether you’re wagging your tail in the air (a signature from Kyle Miller), “stirring it up” with pivoting hip openers, or practicing seated pranayama, their livestream classes keep it interesting. And yes, you will show up slack and noodle ready to dominate the week. (Can you say it’s detox month and I really miss pasta?)

What you will need:

All you really need is yourself. A streamlined, sweat-wicking PUMA Forever Luxe set that won’t rub or ride on the downhill dog, and a sturdy cork block to support bridges, scales or your laptop (it’s the perfect pedestal!) Are excellent Yoga companion.

TUESDAY:
Get the heart rate

Alex Toussaint

The training: Alex Toussaint
Hip-hop ride, peloton

With persistent catchphrases like “Get your ass off the couch! Let’s ride baby “and” We got to work, “Alex Toussaint is like your personal hype guy. His 45-minute hip-hop ride, combined cadence-increasing sprints with resistance-building climbs and bass-drop beats, is so motivating and intense that the only competition on this leaderboard will be your own PR.

What you will need:

Beyond the bike, you should need that Corkcicle cold water bottle, three pound hand weights for one of the optional quickie follow-up arm toning series, and a set of non-slip headphones to keep your ears out when you sweat.

WEDNESDAY:
MELLOW OUT

Manjit Devgun

The training: Manjit Devguns Manifestation Meditation, HealHaus

This is not a workout, but the brain is like a muscle that needs training, right? Also, I’m all for a weekday reset. And Manjit Devgun’s 30-minute meditation from HealHaus – a Brooklyn-based spa that offers a handful of healing routines, breath work, and virtual wellness workshops to choose from – is like therapy. Singer-songwriter Manjit uses a synthesis of sound and visualization techniques to keep your mind occupied (and stay away from your day’s never-ending to-do list). Blink your eyes and you will feel lighter, calmer, and patiently equipped to deal with Wednesday’s working burns.

What you will need:

Start with a soft meditation pillow – I love that this velvety soft set has a touch of lavender in the filling – that you can wear in any corner of the house. Next, have a diffuser handy (extra points if an outlet is not required) and sprinkle a few drops of tree bark, frankincense, eucalyptus, and soothing lavender oils around it. Inhale, bliss, repeat.

THURSDAY:
BURN THE BOOT

The training: Ellery Allebrands Livestream, Barre3

Barre3 is basically a sixty minute thigh-melting loot burner (good luck sitting down the next day). Before I scare you off, I should say that Ellery Allebrands high energy class streamed through Zoom is not your traditional barre class. Instead of pliés, relevantés, and anything that ends in -és, you’ll find fun, dynamic mat movements that shape, tone and make you sweat. The loud, happy music somehow distracts attention from the cardio (blessing). And Ellery is right with you, doing – and talking you through – any exercise, however tough it is.

What you will need:

The basics include a squishy exercise ball for extra lower back support and core strengthening (this comes with a handy inflator), a durable foam roller for the above-mentioned pain the next day, and an invigorating facial cleansing essence for those at ease Class before a meeting in front of the camera.

FRIDAY:
TORCH THE ABS

Travel Kan

The training: Reise Kan’s full body, The Studio MDR

Taking a mat-based Pilates class with Journey Kan is like taking a class with a friend that will always make you laugh, even if you clench your teeth through a board that is way too long. While the Megaformer experience of the IRL Lagree Method (which is currently being offered in The Studio MDR’s outdoor popup on Platform LA) is no better, the online courses are equally effective. They focus on bumpless, high-intensity burning movements that mimic the effects of the machine. Also cool: each class is completely different, so you will never get bored.

What you will need:

A non-slip mat, good WiFi, and a super clean (and chic looking) deodorant. Sliders are also clutch bags, but – shameless professional tip – paper plates work just as well. And the ten pound Power Ring from Bala Bangles is amazingly easy to use instead of dumbbells for core exercise.

SATURDAY:
GO OUT

Alyssa Geiger

The training: hiking, cycling, outside!

Ground yourself in nature, go on the trails, put on snowshoes, ski down the slopes. Colder climes, warmer climes don’t matter. The feeling of moving your body outside is great and seems especially important to our sanity these days, no.

What you will need:

A cracked, cracked and dry lip ointment in a compact, indelible form, large blackout curtains and a strap-friendly backpack for packing the extras like a water bottle, tinted sun protection factor, portable speakers, snacks.

  1. Electric sunglasses

SUNDAY:
Shake it out

Dance church

The training: dance church

The dance church may be the next one I’ll ever take apart on a dance floor again. And, like many other staff, I’ve gotten pretty religious about the Sunday morning livestreams. I love the epic dance jams of the 90s, the relaxed freestyle moves that even the most demanding of choreographers feel coordinated with, and the 60 minutes of covert cardio. Dancer high should really be a thing.

What you will need:

Clean up your living room, put on a pair of earrings, turn up the volume and warn your partner / roommate: things are going to be weird. I like to have a stash of moist, rose water-infused mist close by for a refreshing, ahhh-inducing splash centerline. Mist generously for best results.
