The now 53-year-old host of The Murder Squad podcast was first introduced to the case in 1994 when he was hired as an investigator for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. At the time, the perpetrator was identified in those files as the East Area Rapist. Fortunately, due to a DNA breakthrough in 2001, it was found that the crimes of Visalia Ransacker, East Area Rapist, Diamond Knot Killer, and Original Night Stalker were actually committed by a man who was later renamed the Golden State Killer.
After years of collecting DNA evidence related to these unsolved crimes, Holes contacted the genealogist Barbara Rae-Venter. Through this genealogist, a successful genetic profile and pedigree was used for the arrest of DeAngelo.
