The production of Jennifer Lopez’s new film Shotgun Wedding was overshadowed by two major tabloid storylines. Initially, the original star Armie Hammer stepped back from the project amid its ongoing scandals and was quickly replaced by Josh Duhamel. Then while the project was being filmed in the Dominican Republican, Jennifer Lopez broke up, made amends, and eventually broke up with Alex Rodriguez. It didn’t leave much brain space to even ask what the film was about, and the first teaser photos uploaded to Lopez’s Instagram today come as a shock. This isn’t a simple rom-com, although it seems to be exactly what it says it is: there’s definitely a wedding, and there definitely seems to be a shotgun option.
Lopez and Duhmal appear in fairytale wedding attire, except particularly bloody and injured. It’s not quite Game of Thrones’ Red Wedding, but it’s not far from Dynasty’s infamous Moldovan wedding either. Almost the only thing left intact is Lopez’s still perfect bare lip. (One thing about J.Lo: she might be in the middle of a mess, but you know she’ll still keep that nude lipstick on for a touch up).
According to the official description, the film begins with a romantic comedy standard: the couple are preparing for their dream wedding, but their wayward and crazy family creates tension. You know how to do it. Then, in the middle of the wedding, suddenly everyone is kidnapped and the bride and groom have to save everyone.
Co-stars include Lenny Kravitz, confirmed national comedy sweetheart Jennifer Coolidge, emerging national comedy sweetheart D’Arcy Carden, Sonia Braga and Cheech Marin. Lopez also confirmed that the film is scheduled for June 29, 2022.
