Nice Pores and skin (and Much less Stress) in New Orleans

We spotted the gorgeous, funny, and straight forward Danielle Prescod on Instagram – the former fashion editor exercises radical honesty and speaks directly about everything, including racial justice and fear. Her mornings have been looking very different lately: Prescod is now working hard on a book, Token Black Girl (to be released in Fall 2021) and is co-founder of 2BG (2 Black Girls) Consulting, a company she and Chrissy Rutherford bought during Black Lives founded the matter movement to educate and advise beauty and fashion brands on inclusivity, crisis management and diversity. After many years in NYC, Prescod moved to New Orleans during the pandemic, where she is staying for the time being.

Prescod’s Tomorrow is supposed to present her in such a way that she is both present and as calm as possible to move through her day. “I have a crippling need for control,” she laughs. Meditation helps to stay present and calm, as does simplified skin care, exercise, and not a drop of makeup lately.

7:30 am: The first thing I do before I get out of bed is meditate. I was very resistant to meditation, but now I’ve become one of those people who have to do it every day and who tell everyone else to do it too. I am afraid and can be overly critical of myself. Meditation helps me focus my energy and gives me something to do that is only for me. I use the Insight Timer app. It’s free and I mostly listen to guided meditations from black women. Meditation wasn’t an immediate love for me, but I stuck to it and over time it has worked out well. You really just have to commit to doing it on a daily basis.

8 a.m .: Next, I’ll make my bed. I am crazy about making my bed. My mother was strict with us on this task when I was growing up, and it stayed. I have to make my bed so I can get out and start my day. If my bed isn’t made, I am convinced that my day will turn into chaos.

8:10 am: I was working in beauty, and that meant I was always trying new things. It was horrible for my skin so now I am trying to keep my skin care situation simple. I wash my face with Kat Burki KB5 Calming Gel Cleanser or Dr. Barbara Sturm foam cleaner. I have naturally oily skin, so I usually cleanse in the morning and evening.

If I haven’t used a peeling pad overnight the night before (I wipe one up once a week to glow), I love the G.Tox tonic after cleansing. It’s firming and refreshing for my oily skin, but it contains AHAs so I skip it if I’ve used the scrub which is a great scrub. My skin is pretty clear, but because I have my hair in braids right now (which can be irritating), I use the lightbulbs on my chest and back every night to combat breakouts there.

I live in Louisiana where it’s very humid so I don’t need extra layers of moisturizer – the glow lotion is enough! I wore makeup almost every day of my life until March 2020. I hardly wear it now. Really, on the one hand I can count how often I put on make-up in 2020 and 2021. It was liberating. When I go outside I put on SPF and that’s it.

9 a.m .: I go to private Pilates twice a week in the morning. What I missed the most during the pandemic is my personal training so I am relieved that I can do this one on one. I also ride horses: I spend Thursday mornings in the barn – grooming, tacking and then riding. Riding is an inherently socially distant sport, so it was easier for me than anything. It’s always my favorite day of the week.

10 a.m .: Breakfast – I’ll make a Matcha Latte with oat milk. I make healthy pancakes and turkey bacon on the weekends, but have an English muffin with cream cheese on the weekdays. I’m reviewing my group chats to see what I might have missed overnight. I love talking to my friends about our favorite reality shows like Real Housewives and 90 Day Fiancé.

Extra Credit: When I feel dry, I love a little body butter. It smells so good and it sinks right into my skin.
