Crossing the Streams is our look at everything the major streaming services have to offer each month, and this time around, we’re checking out Hulu’s new additions for June 2021, including a great new horror movie, some 70s classics, and more!

Hulu Pick of the Month June 2021

One of the best horror films of last year is coming to Hulu this month, and it’s a low-profile gem. Come true (Premieres June 11) is a feature from the director of the best segment of the 2016 horror anthology Holidays, and Anthony Scott Burns shows he’s the real deal. The film follows a teenage girl struggling with problems at home and in her head while her nights are spent sinking into nightmares that hint at something even worse on the horizon. It’s an ambitious and unsettling experience, with atmosphere and style left on top of an engaging score by Burns (nicknamed Pilot Priest) and a strong leading performance by Julia Sarah Stone.

New Hulu Originals for June 2021

False positive

Hulu’s light in originals this month, but the documentation Change the game makes up for it in weight, timeliness and importance. It dates back to 2019, but the movie’s focus is even more relevant today as it examines transgender athletes in high school sports. Michael Barnett’s film is far from objective on the subject, but don’t let a watch put you off – the three young athletes at the center of the film deserve your time and opinion on the immense hardships and struggles that go with them Situations. The movie may not change your mind, but it’s never bad to stretch your empathy and listen to others.

When you think of Ilana Glazer you think weird, but sometimes comedians feel the urge to go dark and we can’t help but follow. False positive (Premiered June 25), Glazer plays as a woman whose efforts to get pregnant she and her husband (Justin Theroux) in Dr. Hindle’s (Pierce Brosnan) clinic – already a bad sign for her, as Hindle is the name of the lead role in David Cronenberg’s utero-horror The Brood (1979) – but things take a dark turn after their child is born. Gretchen Mol and Josh Hamilton co-stars, and while it won’t be billed as a comedy, we’re still hoping for a fun slice of genre thrill.

The greatness of the 70s

The long farewell

Sure, your kids would probably gravitate towards the fancier live-action / CG hybrid remake from 2006, but the original Charlotte’s Web (1973) is the point my friends. Debbie Reynolds speaks the animated spider, and she is supported by other ’70s icons such as Paul Lynde, Henry Gibson, Agnes Moorehead, and others. The story is just as warm and sad as you remember, and the hand-drawn animation conveys the characters and heart beautifully.

Robert Altman’s filmography is filled with divisive films that are equally loved and hated, and the best of them is no different. The long farewell (1973) is a Raymond Chandler mystery only Altman would venture, and if it’s not for you, that’s fair – but if you love amazing, intriguing, fresh Los Angeles films with a memorable Elliott Gould lead, then this is an atmospheric masterpiece that never gets old. Alternately whimsical, weird, and devastating, the film shows a private dick lending a hand to a friend just to watch everything collapse around him. It’s brilliant stuff.

Michael Winner isn’t nearly as popular with a filmmaker, but the man delivered more than a few blasts in his day, including Chatos Land (1972), The Mechanic (1972), and The Sentinel (1977). Scorpio (1973) was never loved by these other films, but it still deserves your eyes as it delivers a solid thriller about espionage, assassins, and early retirement. Burt Lancaster plays an aging hit man who is set to be exterminated by his old bosses at the CIA, and the heat is in full swing when Alain Delon circles for the murder.

Serious gemstones you might have missed

Night of kings

It’s easy to find movies that make a good, entertaining time, but don’t sleep on the movies that find serious power in the beauty of the real world and badass human truths. Martin Scorseses silence (2016) isn’t much talked about – it’s not flashy or GIF-worthy, and it’s barely quotable – but it’s a powerful stunner nonetheless. It’s also gorgeous as Scorsese captures the rugged, natural beauty of bygone landscapes and people. Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield play young priests in Japan looking for their mentor (Liam Neeson) and they’re not entirely prepared for what they find.

Scott Coopers Enemies (2017) was fairly maligned when it was released, but while it isn’t exactly an easy-to-watch movie, it’s nonetheless an important and powerful one. Christian Bale plays a captain in the US Army around 1892 who has the task of escorting an Indian chief through enemy territory – the enemy is of course both local and white who constantly grapple with people and cultures that do not match their own . Alternating beautiful and ugly, mean and emotional, it blends strong action and drama with equally memorable performances by Wes Studi, Rosamund Pike, Jesse Plemons, Peter Mullan, Stephen Lang and others. Not only is it one of the best westerns of the century, but also one of the best of its time.

Night of kings (2020) starred at numerous festivals up to and including Sundance 2021 last year, and while it’s not a movie destined for widespread popularity, it is more than worth your time. Author / director Philippe Lacôte’s magical drama transports viewers to a prison on the Ivory Coast, where power changes hands under a blood-red moon and a man has the task of telling a story in order to captivate the audience. When it ends, he dies, but the magic lies in the journey. This is a beautiful film that explores the power of history and the storyteller, and it’s unlike anything you’ve seen lately.
