At the beginning of June we look to the coming summer season with renewed optimism. One of the highlights here on Nantucket will be the Nantucket Historical Association’s sixth annual Nantucket by Design event, held August 5-7. In the run-up to the event, I am excited to be working with the NHA to produce several videos showing the amalgamation of. highlight the robust history of Nantucket with the power of great design. I’m excited to share our first spotlight with one of the most iconic icons of Nantucket’s rich craft culture. Join me with host Mary Lacoursiere, NHA Director of Education, and several island master craftsmen as we explore the history, traditions and styles of Nantucket lightship baskets, including a special look at the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum exhibit in celebration of their new NHA Affiliation, at Hadwen House.
With interest in crafts, basketry, and everything rattan-related growing, it’s the perfect time to reconsider the legacy of the Nantucket Lightship Baskets. With a fascinating history and far reaching global influence, I hope you enjoyed learning more about this signature Nantucket treasure.
In the coming months I’ll be sharing more about this year’s NBD event. As our Chair, Kelly Williams explains, “Our theme this year is renewal and we look forward to incredible discussions about how design can renew not only a home but also a spirit, and how we can thoughtfully renew our cherished antique homes to modern ones Life. “We are excited that we will switch to a hybrid, personal AND virtual, starting with our unique keynote design luncheon with designer Nate Berkus, who will accompany us on the island! You can find out more about this important fundraiser on the Nantucket by Design page and buy tickets to both in-person (lunch is always sold out) and virtual events. Stay tuned!
