A huge global television audience watched in horror today as Christian Ericksen, Denmark’s best player, collapsed on the field just before halfway through his game against Finland.
Ericksen reportedly collapsed while throwing in. He went to the sideline and when the ball was thrown in his direction it hit him and he fell to the ground.
Teammates rushed to his aid and desperately called for a medical team. The medics performed CPR in the field, with the worst possible outcome likely at some point. Teammates surrounded him on the field and the crowd at his home stadium in Copenhagen fell silent for the 10 minutes he was lying down. ESPN broadcast the game to a global audience.
Ericksen was taken to the hospital and stabilized.
A Twitter report by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) said that a crisis meeting had taken place with both teams and match officials. The game was interrupted with the score 0-0.
