Where exactly the bikini line might be has changed significantly over the past decade, and we’ve got to a point where anything from minimal trimming to maximal waxing goes. “For too long, the only bikini care routine that was considered ‘normal’ for women was complete hair removal,” says Laura Schubert, co-founder of Fur, a clear line of pubic hair and skin products. “It is important to us that we validate the bush as a legitimate expression of body hair. If you choose to keep all or part of your body hair as an expression of your identity, that’s great too! Everyone across the gender spectrum should feel able to form their own opinion about their body hair, which is why we work so hard to normalize all grooming routines as equally valid options. Why shouldn’t freedom of expression extend to body hair? “

Whether you want to stay sleek and hairless on the side, or prefer to experiment with something bushier and ’70s-inspired, there are some brilliant, clean ways to keep the bikini line free of irritation and ingrown.

“Every type of pubic hair or bikini line begins with a peeling,” says Schubert. She likes chemical and physical peels (we included both in our Microderm face scrub for the same reason – the two optimize each other for better results). “We made our scrub with fruit enzymes and glycolic and lactic acids to dig deep into your pores and keep them free of excess sebum and other debris, and we added jojoba pearls to remove it all and smooth out the overall texture. When your pores are clogged, your hair cannot grow and grow out, so it curls inward and leads to ingrowth. When your skin is clean and healthy, your hair can grow more comfortably, ”says Schubert. “About ten minutes before I start the shower, I put it on as a mask so the acids have a chance to go to work.”

Frequent exfoliation – the more often you do it between treatments, the more better – prevented a build-up of dry skin, which in turn can cause ingrown skin. Schubert exfoliates two to three times a week, but says the right amount of exfoliant for you depends on how sensitive your skin is. “If you have sensitive skin, your scrub can only be a good drybrush followed by a powerful serum. If you have coarser skin, you may want a stronger exfoliator. No two skin types are alike, so take the time to experiment until you find the right fit, ”she says.

If your skin is particularly prone to redness, bumps, or itching, Schubert recommends treatment with soothing ingredients. For this purpose, their special gloves for ingrown people have been developed, which are soaked with a soothing peeling serum made from salicylic acid, witch hazel and aloe leaf juice. “The longer you pass between sessions, the worse the ingrown can get,” says Schubert. “For the same reason, I think a lot of people are itching right now, and the gloves are great for that.”

“When you’ve gone through this initial itchy, red ingrown phase, you’ll want to condition your pubic hair to make it softer and more manageable,” says Schubert. Their oil – made from grape seeds and jojoba, vitamins A and E, and tea tree oil – is said to help soften, calm and soothe skin and hair. “Apply it to any hair you want to soften up immediately after you shower or bathe, and any skin that could use a little extra moisture and clarity,” she says.

“Over time, you should see less ingrown, smoother skin and softer hair. And to be honest, I think it’s a cool opportunity to grow hair that you might not otherwise get, ”says Schubert. “You can always take it off later. Just let the hair grow naturally! However, if you want a slimmer look, we recommend using clean, sharp cutting scissors – not the ones you use to open packages – or an electronic trimmer with a guard to determine the exact length. “

OPTION B: SHAVE

Whether you’re just keeping order or doing major hair removal surgery, Schubert has some brilliant tips.

“The right shaving foam creates a buffer to protect the skin, and the wrong one – especially conventional foams – can really dry out with potentially irritating fillers and chemicals,” says Schubert.

“Always shave with the grain, not against it,” says Schubert. “And while this seems obvious, the important thing is: use a sharp razor. In general, you should replace the blade every time you shave this area, especially if you have become heavily ingrown. Safety razors are ideal for this and are more sustainable. “

“After shaving, apply a thin layer of stubble cream – Fur’s consists of skin-softening olive extracts, tea tree oil and lavender oil – to keep the skin smooth and to reduce regrowth,” says Schubert.

OPTION C: PRIME YOUR SKIN FOR GROWING

For those growing at home or in a salon, pre and post care is crucial, says Elizabeth Taylor, owner of the True Beauty Brooklyn Spa.

“Always prepare the area you plan to wax by cleaning it with cloths or an antiseptic solution,” says Taylor. “Then use a small amount of quick-absorbing oil – like fur oil, grape seed, or jojoba – to moisturize your skin. Next, use a clean cloth or arrowroot powder to blot off any excess oil. You want the wax to only pick up your body hair, but when the skin is dry the wax can stick to it more and cause painful results. “

“Then level your skin with a gentle scrub three times a week to regenerate the skin and hair in a cycle that allows the follicle to breathe freely,” says Taylor.
