One reason for the slower metabolism with age is the decreasing muscle mass. Muscles have a faster metabolism (that is, they use more energy) than fat tissue, even when they are not doing anything. Metabolism is a series of chemical reactions that digest food, convert food into energy, and use that energy to move and think.
